Australian Formula 3 first as racing goes under lights.

The Australian Formula 3 Championship will race under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park, the first time the category has done so in it's 23 year history.

Round 1 of the 2022 Australian Formula 3 Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park will be run in the evenings both Friday and Saturday nights with the category to have a race both nights under lights. The round will be part of the Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS) round 1 taking place on February 18 & 19.

Category manager Ian Richards is excited at the prospect of seeing Australian Formula 3 under lights. “These cars are going to look amazing under lights in Sydney.” Richards said. “You’ll really be able to see how spectacular these cars are with the flames and sparks."

Formula 3 are still the fastest current category around the 3.9km Gardner circuit with Nick Fosters lap record being a 1:22.62. The high-speed flowing nature of the track is perfectly suited the high downforce capabilities of the Formula 3 machinery.

Practice for round 1 commences on the Friday morning with qualifying in the afternoon ahead of the first night race on the Friday evening. The feature race is expected to take place on the Saturday evening.
