MITCH EVANS has picked up where he left off in 2009 by taking the Meguiar’s Pole award for round one of the 2010 Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship at Wakefield Park today.
After winning the season-ending F3 SuperPrix at Sandown last year, Evans returned to the track today and wasted no time getting back on top of the Gold Star pack as he took the first Meguiar’s pole award of the year. The grinning New Zealander took home a personalised Meguiar’s jacket, a package of sponsor’s product and a $150 cash bonus for his efforts in the sole 25-minute session; the Quick Six shootout returns at Symmons plains in April.
Evans slammed in a 54.5071s lap moments after a red flag, and with just seconds to go in the session, to take top spot ahead of fellow Kiwi Ben Crighton and teammate Ben Barker.
Crighton posted a career best qualifying performance today to take second, 0.3s behind Evans and just fractions ahead of Barker but it took the last-ditch lap from Evans to pull any sort of margin over the TanderSport Dallara as the pair had been split by just hundredths for most of the session.
Half of one second covered the top four, with Tom Tweedie well in contention in fourth place.
Race one will be contested over sixteen laps this afternoon at 15:10pm Eastern time and will be covered with live timing and coverage on puremotorpsort.tv
