Waters rates Formula 3 after maiden test at Mallala
Story By: F3 Media Release  Date: 1/6/2012 at 6:22:55 PM
Reigning Australian Formula Ford Champion Cameron Waters has described his first test of a Formula 3 car as ‘awesome’, following his first laps in a car today at Mallala near Adelaide.

The 18-year-old from Mildura will make his F3 debut in Darwin in two weeks time, driving the Mygale Australia M07 chassis owned by Mygale boss Greg Woodrow.

The weekend will serve as something of a holiday from his full-time vocation as a driver for Dunlop V8 Supercar series squad Dreamtime Racing, an offshoot of Kelly Racing’s main game V8 operation.

Waters was quick to praise the grip available from the wings and slicks racer.

“They’re awesome cars. I just went out there and got a feel for it. It was wet in the first session and I’ve just come in from the dry – they’ve just got so much grip and you can push them so late under brakes and into a corner,” Waters told Formula3.com.au.

“They’re awesome things to drive. They’re sort of similar to the Formula Ford except they don’t move around as much, so it hasn’t taken me long to adapt.”

Waters won his Formula Ford title aboard a Mygale chassis and June’s drive at Hidden Valley is something of a pat on the back from the company for a job well done, Waters the first to drive what will be the second of the French-built chassis to take to the Australian championship.

Jon Mills’ car was the first to run this year, running well at Symmons Plains raceway and becoming the first non-Dallara to take to the championship in ten years of Australian F3.

He said it didn’t take him long to agree to the drive when Woodrow came calling.

“It’s awesome to get the Mygale F3 car as well as a little bit of a reward for winning the Formula Ford title.

“About a week ago Greg sent me a message asking me if I’d like to drive the car at Darwin, by 7am the next morning I called him back and had sorted it all out. I’ve got to thank Greg and Mygale for giving me the chance to drive it.

“I don’t actually know a lot about it, being my first drive of an F3 car but you can see how good it is and how well engineered it is. They’re just an awesome car and you can see that in the Formula Ford chassis built by Mygale as well – just how well they’re engineered.”

Despite the competitive pointy-end of this years’ Gold Star pack, Waters is under no pressure to get results in two weeks time. Both he and the car owner agree that merely finishing the races will be the main objective.

“There are no expectations at all. We just want to bring the car home in one piece, do laps and any results we get will be a little reward.”
